When I heard that Cecelia Ahern had written a YA book I was intrigued. She’s a writer that I’ve read many times and I have spent days lounging by a pool on holiday reading her contemporary chic lit stories. Perhaps that is why I was ultimately so disappointed by this book.
Set in a dystopian future (yawn…) where they try to eliminate flawed leaders by making ordinary people go before a court if they have been reported as flawed. Guilty people are branded and their passports taken away and ostracised from society. I just found the judgements and the situations to be flawed in themselves and quite annoying. A leading footballer has an affair but is found not guilty of being flawed because his wife clearly wasn’t enough to keep him from straying… The whole idea of the Flawed human character and the bullying of those found to be flawed just doesn’t sit well with me.
For me the story has no redeeming features. The saccharine sweet Celestine with her perfect boyfriend and amazing life just left me cold. I struggled to get through this book to the end and that doesn’t happen very often!
