I’ve reviewed Adele Parks a few times on here before and unlike other writers she always seems to go for something a bit different. A bit quirky and unexpected.
This is a story of a family, a life lived with secrets. Daisy is married to Simon. He is an unacknowledged alcoholic and when sober he tries to do the best that he can for his family. The best thing that ever happened to them was the birth of their daughter Millie.
When Simon pushes Daisy to try for another child they end up in the office of a fertility specialist. Taking Simon to one side he assures him that with the quality of his sperm they could never have a child naturally. They would have to consider a donor. Simon knows straight away that Millie isn’t his daughter. That Daisy has lied to him.
Ultimately the combination of secrets and alcohol start to tear the family apart but you are never entirely sure who is lying and about what right up until the final few pages.
