After about ten years of anticipation this turned out to be a mighty tome to trawl through. It comes in at a mighty 768 pages. I had forgotten how exhausting it was seeing things from Edward’s over analytical viewpoint and his penchant for self deprecation and darkness.
That said this book doesn’t just rehash Twilight for a new generation. There is quite a lot of new information in here that Bella knew nothing about when the first book was narrated from her point of view. More detail on Edward’s abrupt departure to visit the Denali clan when he is first exposed to Bella’s scent and greater elaboration on the contract that the Cullen’s made with the Quilleute tribe all those generations ago.
My personal favourite though is Edward’s version of Bella’s flight to Phoenix after they come into contact with the tracker James and his partner Victoria. Given that Bella has quite a limited view of what happened – and is unconscious and in hospital – there was huge scope here for a lot more detail on the roles that everyone played and how the fake back story was constructed. For me this was the real highlight of the book.
I really wanted to give this book a five star rating but there are sections where I found myself metaphorically rolling my eyes and skipping paragraphs of the over analytical, ridiculously descriptive text. Yes it suited the character but enough already!
