Fifteen years ago Sara Linton’s life changed forever. Due to start a much coveted paediatric fellowship at Grady her life was turned upside down when she was raped by the hospital caretaker. All thoughts of a successful surgical career were set to one side and she retreated to the comfort and safety back home in the bosom of the Linton family.
One evening, while on call in the ER, Sara battles to save the life of a young woman who has been viciously attacked. As Will Trent leads the investigation into Dani Cooper’s assault it is suddenly apparent that her assault is linked in some way to the attack on Sara. Unable to get the police to pursue a criminal trial against the assailant, the girl’s family bring a civil case against him with devastating consequences.
If you have read any of Slaughter’s books you will know that she doesn’t pull any punches with her descriptions and the books can make for fairly uncomfortable reading and this one probably more than most. The details of the assaults on Sara, Dani and the other girls are particularly graphic and will be a trigger for a lot of people. That said I think that this is probably my favourite book in the series so far. We get to see what Sara was like post medical school and how uncomfortable her peer group of fellow surgeons actually was. The wealthy and entitled men in her intern group were very different to her small town background as a plumbers daughter. Even her relationship with Mason feels very out of character and was just a way for her to be part of the group. It is a genuinely disturbing story and one that had me thinking about it long after the final page.
