I held off on reading this one for a while. There was a period late last year where it felt like all I was reading were psychological thrillers. Ever since Girl on a Train it became the trendy genre that had got people reading again and I was feeling a little jaded by it.
Gone Without a Trace tells quite a different story. Hannah is a senior accountant in her firm and has just heard that she is likely to be promoted to a director later that year. Arriving home with a celebratory bottle of champagne she finds all the lights off and an empty house. Once inside she realises that her boyfriend’s pictures and prints are missing from the hallway and thinks that she has been burgled. Summoning up the courage to walk round the rest of the house she realises that every single thing he possessed is gone and that all that remained were the possessions that belonged to Hannah. Matt has left her.
Unable to cope with the unexplained rejection Hannah becomes a little unstable as she puts all her energy into tracking Matt down. Her work suffers, her relationships with her friends become tense and she is single minded in her search for answers and for Matt himself.
Told from Hannah’s point of view, it is not always an easy read as the character begins to fall apart. She is ruthless and unswerving in pursuit of her goals and the other characters in the story are not always as supportive as they first appear to be.
It is an interesting story and would make a pretty good book club choice as there are lots of potential discussion points here. I can’t say too much without giving away the plot entirely!
