Book Review: Obsession – Amanda Robson ***

Obsession is the debut novel from Amanda Robson. It is a story of two couples. Rob is a GP married to Carly. On a drunken night on a camping holiday in France he is pressed by Carly to tell her who he would be unfaithful with if he could. Such a simple question she has no idea that it will destroy her life. She is shocked when he says Jenni’s name. Jenni is a nurse and one of Carly’s friends and she is married to fireman Craig. As time passes Carly becomes more pre-occupied by the revelation and becomes convinced that Jenni is trying to steal Rob from her.

At times I found this book intensely frustrating. Each chapter is narrated by one of the four main characters so you are at the mercy of that person’s motivations as to what they reveal and often the narrative is contradictory from the different points of view.

I can honestly say that I really didn’t like any of the main
four characters. All were selfish and deserved their fate. Ultimately though this is a psychological thriller that you will struggle to put down once you have started it. The staccato short chapters seduce you into reading “just one more page” until you tumble into the shocking finale.

I love sharing my favourite books with friends - nearly always spoiler-free as I hate reading a synopsis of the whole book in other reviews.
