I’m not going to lie, this was a bit of a filler book for me until Midnight Sun gets released this week. It felt like time to dip my toes back in the YA vampire romance universe. Everything about this book just screamed “Twilight Rip Off” from the black, white and red simplistic cover to the human teenage heroine Grace and the dark and brooding teenage vampire Jaxon Vega.

Once I started reading though I was really pleasantly surprised. Yes there is a bit of an homage to Twilight – even including Jaxon giving a copy to Grace to read! – but Wolff has made her own changes to vampire lore and there are a few other supernatural creatures thrown in for good measure. Grace is a tough cookie, recently orphaned and sent to live with her Uncle and cousin in Alaska. She isn’t the simpering leading lady. She is strong and opinionated and knows what she wants.

Despite my own misgivings I devoured this book in just a couple of days, often reading into the early hours because it was just so hard to put down. My biggest issue was the fact that the book ended so suddenly on quite a shocking cliffhanger. Reading the eBook version I thought I had a good chunk of the book left but there are three key chapters that have been rewritten from the point of view of Jaxon – sounds familiar?! These are actually quite interesting and worth a read but it did mean the book ended quite abruptly. Looks like I’ve got a long wait until Crush is released <sigh>

Its not surprising to hear that Universal Pictures have already picked up the movie rights to this saga. It feels like this one could run and run.
